This is an old post I wrote and never got around to actually publishing.  It’s old, but hey, better than nothing!  Here goes…

Oliver turned 1 a few weeks ago–how did that happen so fast?  I think I say that in every post.  Oliver has lots of tricks up his sleeve.  A few days after officially turning 1 he started walking.  It started before his birthday where he would take a couple of steps and then leap to his final destination.  Then, at church he was walking in the foyer and finally figured out the slow and balanced approach.  He’s been quick up the stairs for quite a few months now–still hasn’t learned how to go down them yet.  He has learned to say “hot”, “dada”, “mama”, “hi”, “boo!”, “go”, “uh-oh”, “baby”, and can also bark like a dog.  He LOVES playing rough–especially with his dad.  He waves to everyone when we go out and is basically pretty friendly and happy.  He is a terrible teether and gets pretty grumpy.  Speaking of which…he only has 4 teeth–all on the bottom.  He’s got some serious bulges on his upper gums so who knows when those will show up.  He sticks EVERYTHING in his mouth.  The kid loves to dance.  As soon as his sisters start playing a wii dance game (Michael Jackson is a favorite) he starts movin’.  Oliver rarely takes a moment to sit and be still.  He is always on the move.  All.  The.  Time.  He will sit and relax with Dad on the couch, that is, if Mom isn’t in the room.  As soon as I show up, he starts whining and wiggles free.  The only other time he will be still is if he is in his crib.  When we put him down to sleep, he flips over on his tummy and pokes his bottom up in the air, with his arms tucked under.  He really is a fun kid–it just takes a lot more physical exertion to keep up with him than it did with the girls!

UPDATE: Ollie is now 13.5 months old and has learned to do even more tricks.  For example, he is now getting down the stairs as fast as he goes up.  The kid has 5 teeth now–those darn things won’t come through.  He is a royal grump when his gums are flaring up.  He says, “Thank you”, “peek-a-boo”, “dog”, “oliver”–or at least he attempts to repeat these words.  Other people probably wouldn’t be able to pick those words out, but as a parent you have special gifts like that.  He loves water.  We recently went to Silverwood in Idaho and we had to drag him out of the water to leave.  He gets into mucho trouble–and I think he likes it.  He is basically in love with sugar–and if you know his father, you know where this trait comes from.  One of our friends put it this way: “We elves try to stick to the four main food groups: candy, candy canes, candy corns, and syrup.”  He even has the ears to go with it.
